It's been 8 months since I last wrote!!! I DO have videos, newsletters, lesson plans, demo's, and oh yea...some art to show!!! Plus a whole bunch of amazing relationships with precious jewels so I guess it's not a travesty that I hardly write. Not even sure anyone reads these as I don't post it very much!!!<br />
But here I am posting a quick note. I went to the CUSTOMS HOUSE MUSEUM in Clarksville, TN yesterday with 3 of my students for the most wonderful show of artwork entitled Women Painting Women in Earnest. SIMPLY FABULOUS!!!<br />

I have been sooooo negligent about blogging. There are just not enough hours in the day. I don't even know if I remember how to do it!! But after listening to <a href="http://www.blogtalkradio.com/artistshelpingartists/2016/12/01/thirty-five-ways-to-increase-your-website-traffic" target="_blank">Artists Helping Artists Blog Talk Radio </a>today I am shamed into checking my blog and find that I did not post AT ALL in 2016!!! Bummer. Thought for a minute 'maybe i can back date a post to make it go on the 2016 tab? ' That is so bad!!! NOPE didn't even try. Honesty is the best policy. There are just so many hours in the day!! Gotta paint and made a commitment to paint at least 3 hours a day in the new year with one or two grace days built in!!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen="" class="YOUTUBE-iframe-video" data-thumbnail-src="https://i.ytimg.com/vi/7LvwQxPzjNU/0.jpg" frameborder="0" height="266" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/7LvwQxPzjNU?feature=player_embedded" width="320"></iframe></div>
I have done several pastels this year and I shot video of several sessions and have LOVED the process so I am going to post a few of those here. <br />
<br />
I am including a few more shots of her. I will most likely be painting her again soon!!!<br />

I will be teaching this method in my 2015 Winter weekly classes. <br />Open Studio Sessions</h2>
<div>
I have not written since April!! Good grief, where did the time go? I think everyone switches to fast speed during this time of year. I had 2 wonderful weeks of art camp, a week with Max Ginsburg in June and have been busy with commissions, garden, family and living life in abundance! I have managed to take time for a few open studio sessions at <a href="http://www.warehouse521.com/" target="_blank">Warehouse 521</a>and have made some new art friends on that side of town. We can literally live all 100 years (as Max plans to live) and still not finish learning and enjoying all that is available to the artist!!!</div>

<span style="font-size: x-large;">Drawing LESSONS...</span></h2>
A quick synopsis of the past 8 weeks of drawing lessons. Each week I included a packet of worksheets available on my website by<a href="http://www.portraitcreations.com/#!-drawing-class-worksheets/c3xy" target="_blank"> clicking here</a>.<br />
<br />
<h3>
<b>Simple Shapes</b></h3>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Along with measuring and proportions of length, </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
shape seeking helps with accuracy in your drawings. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
A study of the basic shapes is so important.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh4iiPXony5JJaYEedPQEwhikTr43uJ2Kg25yGWDkTQQaNYR0Za6f3y-Ur09WOq7v3BdM24mNXWLSBK17ptZ24UNVCGf96Z0HP75Lsikuk20lRrqS5zwETwUNccFqjzDmVZBSk4r5TCCeqU/s1600/drawing-shapes-2-25%2525.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh4iiPXony5JJaYEedPQEwhikTr43uJ2Kg25yGWDkTQQaNYR0Za6f3y-Ur09WOq7v3BdM24mNXWLSBK17ptZ24UNVCGf96Z0HP75Lsikuk20lRrqS5zwETwUNccFqjzDmVZBSk4r5TCCeqU/s1600/drawing-shapes-2-25%2525.jpg" height="242" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<h3>
Mass vs Contour</h3>
<div style="text-align: center;">
We are conditioned from childhood to draw an outline</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
and then color inside the lines.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Learning to see in mass, using the side of the pencil or brush </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
is an important step in thinking more in terms </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
of volume and dimension.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<h3>
Patterns in Nature</h3>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Thank you Juliette Aristides for introducing me to this valuable tool!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
At Alan Lequire's studio, she had us draw a slice of cucumber being mindful of the design. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I have been so focused on creating what I see in front of me </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
that I forget the design element. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Nature provides SUCH inspiration and ideas!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>

Siting Angles</h3>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I am not 'math minded' so when it comes to degree of tilt </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I find it easier to think of the hands on a clock as I compare angles. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This is so important in drawing. We often misjudge angles entirely and are not even aware.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
We used tracing paper to note how many times</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
the angles changed even in just the right edge of the face.</div>

I know that some of you have heard my struggles with pleasing clients and the pressures that go along with painting to please someone else. I know, I know…I keep saying 'paint to please yourself'! Be true to your own instincts about this. Bottom line is that I ABSOLUTELY LOVE painting the face and the figure. I just don't get as excited about a still life or landscape!!! </h2>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I wanted to share a recent experience with you on a portrait for a beautiful bride to be…Krista! She is such a beauty that my main concern was capturing that beauty in a way that did her justice. She was recently married and shared the video trailer with me in which my portrait of her was featured for a quick moment toward the end. <a href="https://vimeo.com/88226033">https://vimeo.com/88226033</a></div>
<div>
I would have loved to work from life with Krista but it was not possible so I had to use the photos she sent. <i>At the bottom I have included a head study I did of her one evening before beginning the portrait.</i></div>
<div>
It is so rewarding to be a part of something as special as this and I wanted to share the process with you!!</div>

<b>Norman Rockwell Exhibit!</b></h2>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I visited the Frist Museum last week to see the Norman Rockwell collection! AMAZING!!!</span></i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I had no idea that his paintings...his brushwork would be such a pleasure to view! Almost as much as seeing Sargent's work in Boston some years ago!!! I did sneak a few shots with my phone! I am not promoting bad museum behavior, I just couldn't resist seeing those beautiful brushstrokes up close. </span></i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">It is there until February 9 so by all means, get over there to see it! Notice how he signed his name differently in every painting. The paint on that palette in this first one, The Art Critic, was about an inch thick in places! It looked like sand & gravel in some of his backgrounds and the edges were not all sharp and rigid like I thought they would be. His skin tones were really amazing! I hope to get back before it leaves Nashville. </span></i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Thank you Frist for bringing it here! CLICK on the images to see them up close!</span></i></div>

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><b>Some key lessons & reminders: </b></span></div>
<div>
<ul>
<li><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Don't draw what you think you are seeing. Draw the shapes around the subject</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Five darks of the face, all 'under' planes 1. Under brows 2. under eye 3. under nose </span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">4. under upper lip 5. under lower lip (chin)</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">First stage drawing, create an envelope where your subject will fit in.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">His instructor, Carolyn Anderson's advice, "Look for and create areas that act like fireflies, catching the eye and moving you around the canvas."</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">"Everyone has the will to succeed, but not everyone has the will to prepare, develop the skill and do the work to succeed."</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">"If you have an ego, park it at the door. If you don't have an ego, park that at the door too. We are all the same & will be learning something new. You will see the difference when you get home and apply what you are learning." Great workshop advice!!</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Kevin admits to using 'bells & whistles' in his paintings, but cautions, "No amount of bells & whistles can save a bad drawing.</span></li>

One of the things she explained to us relates to the beauty of chiaroscuro being in the way the light hits a very ordinary object that is often lifted up to eye level or above. This elevates an otherwise ordinary and humble object, to a place of beauty and dignity.</div>

<b>DRAWING PAPER TIPS</b></h4>
Love this video by<b> J.D. Hillberry</b>. I have a drawing series going in one of my classes and we are talking about everything to do with drawing: charcoal, graphite, composition, lighting, basic shapes and much more. We watched this video recently. In case you missed that week, he has some great illustrations that will stick with you on drawing papers, the effects on paper of oil in your hands & other tips for getting a better drawing!<br />

One of the areas I see artists struggle with the most </div>

is in comparing their work to others around them. </div>

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">DRAWING & PAINTING THE HEAD</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
In case you missed the drawing class this week,<br />
here are a few highlights...</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I think of Helen Van Wyk when I teach about structure and volume in drawing and painting. She often talks about painting apples. When you paint an apple, hold an apple in your hand, take a bite of out it, think about the roundness of that apple. When you paint a head, you are painting a 3 dimensional object like an apple, on a flat surface. That spherical shape will have dark, medium, light and high lighted areas, along with a front, side, top or bottom, depending on eye level. It is very helpful to place an imaginary box over the head in the beginning to define these shapes. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
As Sargent indicated in his teaching, getting the feel of that head as a mass is vital. We often jump right into the features without one thought about the volume of the whole head. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 10px;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i>"and under his hands, a head would be an amazing likeness long before he had so much as indicated the features themselves. In fact, it seemed to me the mouth and nose just happened with the modeling of the cheeks, and one eye, living luminous, had been placed in the socket so carefully prepared for it (like a poached egg dropped on a plate, he described the process)..."</i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="-webkit-border-horizontal-spacing: 2px; -webkit-border-vertical-spacing: 2px;"><b></b></span></div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
I found the following website and YouTube videos by Stan Prokopenko to be very helpful.</div>

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; font-weight: normal; line-height: 16px;">I was intrigued by the following videos and article on artist Jamie Wyeth. I saw his work in 2005 in Maine at the Farnsworth Museum (Wyeth Center). I loved his seagull series, entitled "Seven Deadly Sins". </span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; font-weight: normal; line-height: 16px;">What an interesting man and really fun to watch him work! <span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #71767a; font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; font-weight: normal; line-height: 21px;">Inferno was shot on Location in Jamie Wyeth’s Studio, on his island off the Coast of Maine. Jamie, a celebrated contemporary realist painter, son of Andrew Wyeth, grandson of N. C. Wyeth, has never been filmed at work until the making of this short. Working with great intensity and focus Jamie applies thick watercolors and charcoal to a 60x80 inch piece of corrugated cardboard using his fingers, hands, brushes, and paperclips. As we watch the work in progress the film brings us so close we can hear the roaring inferno of burning garbage and the shrieking of Gulls.</span> </h2>

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: black; font-size: 12px; font-weight: normal; line-height: 16px;">I really envy you," Jamie Wyeth once told his lifelong friend Jimmy Lynch. "You can be you, and nobody notices what you do. I always have to be me and everybody notices." It was no exaggeration; Jamie Wyeth was born conspicuous. Not only is he the grandson of the noted illustrator N.C. Wyeth and the son of Andrew Wyeth, America's most famous living painter, Jamie himself grew up prodigiously blessed. He was handsome, humorous, intelligent, exciting—and by 17 was painting mature portraits well beyond his father's accomplishments at the same age. At 20 he had his first New York show. </span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; line-height: 16px;"> </span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; line-height: 16px;"><a href="http://www.people.com/people/archive/article/0,,20078582,00.html" target="_blank">Read more...</a></span></div>

<b><i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">MASS vs. CONTOUR </span></i></b></div>
One of the things I discuss in class most often is learning to see in MASS! Seems we are conditioned from the time we first pick up a crayon (or as my grandson calls it "care on"), to outline and then fill in the spaces! While this is not 'wrong', it continues to keep me in a linear mode as I work. I think this is one reason that I have often felt my paintings had a contrived feel to them. When I am thinking in linear mode, I tend to work in a piecemeal fashion, working on bits and pieces here and there. I am finally moving out of that mode of work, looking for beautiful shapes that might unify or tie together the separate parts. When continuing in the outline mode after my initial start, it seems I have a difficult time loosening up and letting the beautiful creative flow take charge. As Daniel Greene often said, "It is all much easier than you ever imagined". Instead of continuing to hold the charcoal or brush in a pencil grip style, if I flip it over, perpendicular to my fingers and begin massing with the side, instead of the point, my drawings and paintings are instantly more fluid and painterly.<br />

I photographed these stages at night (which is when the world slows down enough for me to paint without distraction.) I used a warm light so the color is off a bit. The paper I used was white so you can see the warm tungsten lighting. </td></tr>

<br />
Casey poured out instruction without reserve and inspired us all over lunch discussions, studio demos, slideshows, material reviews, easel to easel instruction and much more. I left there with over 100 GB of video, maybe 500 images, new Rosemary brushes and an excitement to paint!!!<br />
<br />
Here are a few shots from the week. I will post video (at Casey's urging) soon!!! I will write more...maybe...if I can fit it into my passionate plan!<br />

If you are not passionate about your subject, your enthusiasm will fizzle when you get to the middle part. I tell my students to spend extra time choosing a subject to paint. When I finally carve out enough time to sit down at the easel, very often I am so anxious to squeeze those glorious tubes of color and feel the swish of a brush that I rush right into a painting without planning or passion. Or I have a model before me and a limited time frame to paint so in my haste, I choose a not so lovely pose and fizzle at the middle part.</span></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #990000; font-family: 'Trebuchet MS';"><br class="webkit-block-placeholder" /></span>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #990000; font-family: 'Trebuchet MS';">A Bible teacher once suggested that in the Old Testament, when the Israelites crossed the Jordon River on dry ground, that the middle part was the hardest part of the journey. You cannot see where you have been and you cannot see where you are going. God instructed them to pick up 12 stones from the middle, and to set them upright in a certain place so that every time they passed that way, they would remember His help and during this middle part, especially.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #990000; font-family: 'Trebuchet MS';"><br class="webkit-block-placeholder" /></span>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #990000; font-family: 'Trebuchet MS';">I know that is quite a far reach in regards to painting, but I find the middle stage to be a real kicker. I no longer see the original drawing or feel that flutter in my gut, that spark and hope of a masterpiece to come! AND I cannot see any end result in my mind. It is a time I am tempted to quit and slide the canvas into the closet.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #0000ee; text-decoration: underline;"><br />
</span></div>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #990000; font-family: 'Trebuchet MS';">BUT if I have a passion for the subject, I will more often hang on, tooth and nail, gripping the brush and forging on. Brings to mind the Alcazaba Fortress in Malaga, Spain. It seemed the journey uphill would never end. My traveling companions and I made the comment, "forge on" several times to encourage each other and the view at the top was SPECTACULAR!"</span><br />

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #990000; font-family: 'Trebuchet MS';"><br class="webkit-block-placeholder" /></span>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #990000; font-family: 'Trebuchet MS';">I see this in my young students especially. The younger they are the shorter their attention span may be. After flipping through art books for maybe five minutes, they dance over to the easel and rush right in. Five minutes later, they are looking for another subject and another canvas to paint on. "I don't want to paint that Mrs. Christy". So I set a time frame and ask them to look for at least 15 minutes and pick out at least three things. Then we will choose.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #990000; font-family: 'Trebuchet MS';"><br class="webkit-block-placeholder" /></span>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #990000; font-family: 'Trebuchet MS';">Children continue to be mirrors for me. We will be working from a model again in the next two weeks. We will be spending the whole first session (2 to 3 hours) on setting up, choosing and photographing various poses. Another handy tip from the business world comes to mind, "Proper planning prevents poor performance."</span><br />
